A motorcyclist wears layers of warm clothing on a ride.

As the cold fall months settle in, many motorcyclists put their bikes into storage until spring. For those of us who want to keep riding as long as possible, even when the temperature drops, having the right gear and dressing properly is key to staying safe and comfortable on the road.

Here’s some of the essential gear you’ll need on a cold fall weather motorcycle ride.

Fall weather can be unpredictable, with sudden temperature drops, cold rain or even snow. Even if you don’t plan to wear it the whole ride, it’s smart to pack rain gear on your bike. Wet clothes can make you freeze fast and being frozen will affect your comfort and reaction time as well. Waterproof jackets, boots and gloves are a must for keeping warm and dry. Covering your neck and wearing gloves can help prevent frostbite, and a full-face helmet will protect you from cold winds and unexpected rain or snow. If you don’t wear a helmet, be sure to wear eye protection, a face covering and a hat to help shield you from the elements.

Insulated, layered clothing is essential for cold-weather rides. Start with a moisture-wicking base layer to keep sweat away from your skin. With moisture-wicking clothing, staying dry helps keep you warm. An insulating middle layer, like a flannel or sweatshirt, for warmth is also essential. Outside of your other layers, wear a durable, waterproof motorcycle jacket that offers crash protection. If you’re riding in really cold weather, you might want an extra-insulated jacket for that outer layer.

Remember, the cold can impact your reaction time, awareness and riding skills, so wearing the right gear is about safety, not just comfort. With all these layers you might feel a bit bulky, but it’s worth it to stay warm and protected on the road. With proper layers and gear, you can enjoy the beautiful fall scenery without worrying about the cold.
