As we approach Saint Patrick’s Day, the fourth most popular American holiday for drinking, Hupy and Abraham is proud to once again announce our sponsorship of SafeRide of Milwaukee County! SafeRide is a program for patrons of any Tavern League of Wisconsin (TLW)-affiliated bar who may request a “safe ride” home should they be too impaired to drive. The program was created to reduce drunken driving and prevent the injuries that come with it.
Upon request, the individual in need is provided a voucher equivalent to a $25 ride, for no charge. The program originally employed the use of local cab drivers but has expanded to use Uber as an option in the Milwaukee area. The cost of the SafeRide program, which is nearly $1 million, is shared by participating TLW members, sponsors like Hupy and Abraham and funds generated by surcharges on OWI convictions.
Between July 2017 and January 2018, the Milwaukee County SafeRide program alone provided 1,438 free rides home to Milwaukee Count Tavern League patrons. Thanks in part to programs like SafeRide, Wisconsin has witnessed a 58 percent decline in alcohol-related fatalities over the last ten years, while also experiencing a 47 percent decrease in injuries and a 38 percent reduction in crashes.
Hupy and Abraham is proud to sponsor this program and hopes that those who may get behind the wheel intoxicated will see the value in this unique program. While it is encouraged that you plan to have a designated driver before drinking, should you need a safe ride home this Saint Patrick’s Day, check to see if the establishment you are patronizing participates in the program.
In the past three years, Hupy and Abraham has donated more than $500,000 to more than 250 worthwhile causes.
