Here are some tips to keep your pets safe this summer.
- Stop leaving your animals in a hot parked car. Temperatures rise rapidly inside vehicles. It doesn’t matter if the windows are cracked or not, it is too hot for your pets to be in the car.
- Give your animal access to fresh water. Animals can get dehydrated just as fast as humans can. Signs of dehydration in animals include a dry nose and panting.
- Keep your animals with identification in case they get loose. Your animals should be chipped and have a collar with your information in case they get out.
- Stay current with flea and tick treatments. Warm weather often leads to an increase in fleas and ticks. Protect your pet by keeping up with treatments and steering clear of heavily wooded areas.
- Avoid hot pavement with your pet’s paws. On hot summer days, asphalt can reach dangerously high temperatures. Whenever possible, walk your pet on grass or use paw wax if you must walk on asphalt.
- Monitor your pet's behavior closely. Signs of heatstroke can include heavy panting, glazed eyes, vomiting, difficulty breathing and seizures. If you see these symptoms, take your animal to shade, pour cool water on your animal and call your vet.
