A man inspects his motorcycle before the first ride of spring.

Now that it’s springtime, motorcycle riders can finally get back on the road after being cooped up for the winter. Even though you may be itching to get that first ride in, it’s very important to give your bike a close inspection. These checks are vital because if your motorcycle is in good condition, you’ll be much safer on the road.

To have a safe first ride in the spring, perform these checks before you take off:

The electrical system on your bike has to be functioning properly for you to have a safe ride. Look over your bike’s entire electrical system, which includes wiring, lights, gauges, turn signals and any switches, to see if they are all working properly. Check your spark plugs, any issues with them will prevent your motorcycle from starting up. This isn’t only important for safety; it can help avoid headaches down the road. You don’t want to be stuck outside, as it’s getting dark, only to find that your headlight doesn’t work.

Now that your electrical system is inspected, you’ll want to look over your bike for debris blocking any components. Since it’s freezing during the wintertime, many small animals look for warmer places to hide, and that might include your motorcycle. Mice are notorious for setting up nests in motorcycle exhaust and air intake systems. Give a close look at these components to make sure nothing is hiding in there. You’ll also want to clear out any other debris you may find, like leaves and dirt to allow your motorcycle to operate properly.

Once you make sure your bike is free of any debris, you’ll need to check all of your motorcycle’s fluid levels. It is very important to make sure they’re filled to the correct level and that there are no leaks. Low fluids can prevent your bike from running properly and even damage the engine. Important fluids to check include gasoline, oil, hydraulic fluid and brake fluids. Make sure none of these deteriorated over the winter by looking at the color of each fluid. Replace any fluids that look dirty or different than the color than they should.

Finally, check your bike for any loose bolts or other components. Pieces that could fall off your bike during riding are a hazard to your safety and others on the road. Loose bolts can cause your bike to wobble making riding incredibly difficult and unsafe. Check to ensure everything on your bike is secured and you'll be ready to go on a safe first springtime ride.

Going through the T-CLOCK method, which can be found here, is another way to ensure your bike is ready to ride. Checking for debris, loose bolts and low fluids is often overlooked, but are key to having a safe ride. With frequent maintenance and proper care, your bike will be ready for the entire riding season to come.
