When St. Patrick’s Day rolls around, images of shamrocks, green attire, Irish pride, and, of course, beer fill our minds. Originally a celebration of Irish heritage, St. Patrick's Day has evolved into one of the biggest days for binge drinking. While the festivities are filled with high spirits and large crowds, they can also bring about risks and accidents.
St. Patrick’s Day Safety Tips
Stay Alert
With large crowds and celebrations, be aware of your surroundings. If walking or biking, wear bright or reflective clothing to stay visible. When driving, stay focused, obey traffic laws, and always wear your seatbelt.
Moderate Your Alcohol Intake
To avoid overindulging, set a limit for yourself and drink water between alcoholic beverages. Eat a good meal before heading out to slow alcohol absorption. If you’re drinking, use a designated driver or take a ride-share or public transport.
Watch for Drunk Drivers
St. Patrick’s Day sees an increase in drunk driving. If you notice an erratic driver, report it to the police. Be cautious when crossing streets and always look both ways.
Injured in an Accident?
Drunk driving kills more than 10,000 people each year in our country, and every single one of those deaths is preventable. This St. Patrick’s Day, if you’ll be drinking alcohol, please remember to find a sober ride home and to remind your friends and family to do the same.
